MULTITASKING WITH TECHNOLOGY

IN AN ACADEMIC SETTING

THE PROJECT

This was the preliminary phase to a research project entitled Multitasking with Technology in an Academic Setting.  This project is based off of a previous project with the broader topic of multitasking with technology.  This project narrowed the research topic to be the use of technology in a university setting.  The purpose of this phase of the project was to develop a conceptual model of the independent and dependent factors that contributed to why and how these students were using technology as it pertained to their academics and what the major areas affected were.  This study was done in regards to university students’ use of technology during class and while they completed homework.  The conceptual model was developed based on common findings from related literatures.

The above presentation was presented at The College at Brockport's Scholar's Day in the spring of 2015. Scholar's Day is where students, faculty, and staff are given the chance to present various topics to the Brockport community.

MY ROLE

I was the only student intern working on this particular research with one of the professors in the Computing Sciences Department at The College at Brockport.  My role in this research project was to collect and review various literatures related to multitasking with technology in an academic setting of the university level.  I wrote relevancy reports on each of the literatures and extracted the core relevant ideas from them.  I then combined all of the core ideas and determined what the independent and dependent factors were.  Working with the professor heading the research project, I developed the conceptual model below.
